Building Department

Province of Ontario Changes to the Ontario Building Code

Legislative and regulatory amendments to the Ontario Building Code came into effect on January 1, 2012 and include new requirements for occupancy permits for newly constructed houses. Additional changes also include requirements for new house construction to meet the new EnerGuide 80 requirements or better.

These changes are part of ongoing efforts to improve the Ontario Building Code. They are intended to support Ontario’s businesses, protect public safety, enhance consumer protection and support the development of a greener Ontario.

The Building Department is part of the Planning & Development Department of the Town of Penetanguishene . The role of the Building Department is to advise Council, the general public and the development industry on matters falling under the Building Code Act and the Ontario Building Code . The Chief Building Official (CBO) and Building Inspector are provided with the authority to carry out the administrative and enforcement functions under the Building Code Act and Ontario Building Code.   Council does not have the authority to amend, change or ignore matters prescribed under the Building Code Act and the Ontario Building Code.

The mandate of the Building Department is to ensure public safety and the well-being of the citizens of Penetanguishene. The Town is committed to the ongoing improvement of our services to the public.   Building Department staff work closely with other regulatory staff and bodies such as Fire Prevention, Health Unit, Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Labour, and the Electrical Safety Authority to ensure that all applicable regulations are adhered to.
